As the result of a generous donation from the SEED Foundation, Bayport-Blue Point elementary school fourth-graders had the chance to experience a part of their social studies curriculum in a hands-on way this spring. During a trip to the Old Bethpage Restoration Village, the students stepped back in time and learned about the Colonial period. The students visited several houses that were original to Long Island but currently reside on the property, learned about the time period with the help of the town mayor, visited traditional sleeping quarters and made purchases in the general store. They also witnessed demonstrations by the town potter and hatter, visited the Powell Farm and toured a one-room schoolhouse. The trip provided many relevant learning experiences that tied into the grade’s curriculum and enhanced the students’ understanding of the time period.

One of the most prestigious student shows on Long Island, the exhibit only accepts approximately 80 pieces of work each year. Besides the honor of being selected to exhibit in this juried student art show, several scholarships and awards are given. Prior to making their submissions, the students were asked to look at artwork in the museum during the school year (in person or online) and use one of the museum’s works as inspiration for a piece. In addition to their art submission, each student wrote a brief essay about the inspirational work as it related to their work. The inspirational work and essay were mounted and placed next to the student work in the gallery.

Blue Point Elementary School first-graders will be taking an up-close look at several species of marine life this spring as they work to maintain a 10-gallon saltwater aquarium. As part of their science and English language arts curriculum, the students have been learning about animals and their habitats, and the classroom tanks will enable them to delve into the subject matter on a deeper level. In conjunction with the grade’s Earth Day celebration, a representative from the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County visited the building and presented a program called “Discovery Tank.” During the visit, the students were introduced to saltwater creatures such as sea stars, shellfish, hermit crabs, snails and fish. They had the chance to touch many of the animals before placing them in the classroom tank and learning about how to care for them for the next several weeks. As the classes help to maintain their tanks, the teachers will be incorporating a variety of educational projects into the experience, including having the students write original stories about their aquarium based on their observations.

Bayport-Blue Point High School students are learning about botany and horticulture in a hands-on way this year by working in the district’s reactivated greenhouse. Located on the high school’s property, the structure has not been in use since the late 1990s and was renovated this fall with the help of several students and science teachers, Phillip Turano and Amity Baum. Having preserved many of the pieces previously used in the facility and with generous donations, in the form of both supplies and information from Bayport Flower Houses, the students have been working to grow several species of plants, flowers and herbs. Student volunteers maintain the greenhouse each day – watering, cultivating plants, cleaning up and regulating the temperatures. The volunteers have also learned how to operate the house, maintain records and care for plants. “The greenhouse was unknown to most students and staff prior to this year so it has been a rewarding experience to welcome people to it and give tours of the place,” said Mr. Turano. “We have used the greenhouse as a teaching tool for earth science classes, environmental science classes used our plants for a research project, and the LEAP class visits the greenhouse weekly to work in the house with us. My ambition is to see the greenhouse function as the nucleus of an outdoor learning complex on campus, which would help support the Advanced Placement environmental science program that we are pioneering this September. It would also serve as an arena for experiments and research projects for all science disciplines.”

Earlier this year, 2,100 individuals (staff members, students and residents) completed a community survey provided by the school district. This survey focused on soliciting input from respondents on a number of key topics, including academic programs, student preparedness, support services, school and district leadership. It was the district’s intention that this approach to gather the community perspective would further open the lines of communication with all stakeholders, while also providing opportunities to actively discuss the current state of our school system as we work to plan for its future. The district has analyzed the results at the administrative level and will be conducting follow up meetings at the building level in the upcoming weeks. The report posted below provides an overview of the survey results, which were shared publically during the Board of Education’s meeting on May 6. For detailed results, click here
